Stylish Man Or Not?

Contrary to popular belief, none of us are born stylish (no matter how much we think we are). Style, the right image and the ability to understand what works and what doesn't, takes years of practice and naturally for most of us, it is pretty easy to get it all very wrong.
Being a stylish man doesn't necessarily refer to someone who stocks designer gear and wears things seen on a catwalk... even to bed. Style requires an understanding of how to maintain an overall image, the attitude to have towards your wardrobe and the ability to know when enough is enough.
I'm sure many reading will probably be confident that they're the most dapper lad around but it is never that easy. Many have their own points of what is required to be stylish and what a man needs to do to ensure he stays that way but below are my top tips I find always work...
  • Grooming- Unless the yeti look is something you're actually going for; regular grooming is essential. If you're going for the fresh look, avoid stubble as it can just make you look messy or if you have a beard keep it trimmed and neat. When it comes to hair, visit your barber regularly and keep on top of it all to ensure you regularly look clean and neat. Sounds like a simple point but grooming is a big point if you want to keep that dapper image.

  • Fitting- If you can't bring yourself to go to the gym, don't think that baggy clothes are the best way to hide the beer belly. You don't have to have a Beckham six-pack in order to look stylish. Whatever you wear, the right fit is one of the most crucial factors that can keep you looking good.

  • Care- One of my pet peeves is seeing a guy with crumpled or ripped clothes. There's no shame in looking after what you wear so rather than chuck it on the floor, fail to read the washing label right or even wash it at all; look after what you're wearing as the mess wont cut it.

  • Quality- Don't be the guy who impulse buys but don't be afraid to also invest in quality clothes. From Denim jeans to plain jackets; designer clothes may seem too expensive but the quality makes them a worthy investment that will be a part of your wardrobe for years.

  • Simplicity- Nobody thinks that the guy wearing twenty designer labels in one go, bright wrist bands and multi coloured trainers is a stylish guy. Simplicity is key so don't overdo anything. Stick to wearing one bright item, or one designer label; don't attempt to show off or stand out of the crowd because when you try that hard, you can never really pull it off.
Whether you think you're a stylish lad or not; getting the right image is not as difficult as you might think. Adopt the right attitudes by taking the time in deciding what you wear and looking after yourself and your clothes and you'll go from standard lad to dapper lad in no time.
