Everything You Wanted to Know About Applying Sunscreen

Sunscreen is by and large the single-most popular, useful and effective skin care product for women and men. It protects the skin from sun damage and is the best anti-aging treatment possible!

However, there is a lot of confusion about the proper usage of sunscreen - right from when to apply it to how much and how often it should be applied. If you don't use it properly, your skin can easily be deprived of the beneficial and protective effects of a sunscreen.
Following are a few pointers on proper sunscreen application:
When? - The first rule of thumb is that sunscreen should be an imperative part of your daily skin care routine. Apply it regularly every day after cleansing and toning the skin. The sunscreen should form the final 'layer' of protection on your face. If you follow up the sunscreen with serum or moisturizer, the sun protection will reduce instantly. In fact, you can opt for a moisturizing sunscreen or moisturizer with sunscreen (SPF 25 or greater) and skip the 'regular' moisturizer step.
If you are applying makeup, wait for the sunscreen to set before proceeding with the foundation and other items. Apply them in light and smooth motions only.
How much? - The paramount problem is that most people apply too little sunscreen. Your skin literally needs a liberal slathering of sunscreen for proper SPF protection. Dermatologists recommend one ounce of sunscreen for complete head-to-toe coverage (about one shot glass). The face alone requires a nickel-size amount of sunscreen (about 1/4th teaspoon) and equal quantities for the chest and neck areas each. The quantity will vary depending on various factors - body size, type of clothing, consistency and texture of the sunscreen, etc.
How to? - Squeeze out the sunscreen on your palm and dot the face or other part of the body with tiny amounts of sunscreen. Spread it all over the skin and rub it in properly.
How long? - Sunscreen does not provide instant protection. It needs some time to get absorbed into the skin and activate the protection. It should ideally be applied 20 minutes before you go out. So, always wait a bit before you step outdoors!
How often? - A general guideline is that sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours on all the exposed body parts. This can be quite frustrating to keep up all day, especially when you are also wearing makeup. However, this rule is applicable only if you are directly exposed to sunlight all the time. Similarly, reapplication is essential even if you wash your face, sweat profusely, work out or go swimming, (even if you wear water resistant sunscreen). If you stay indoors for a major part of the day, the sunscreen will continue to be effective even when you step out in the evening!
In sum, follow the above rules while using the best skin care products for women and you will always be good to go and protected too!
